Overview & Objectives
The Regional Fund Managers' Initiative represents a strategic effort by Jelawang Capital to attract international fund managers who are dedicated to enhancing Malaysia's local startup ecosystem. By connecting global expertise with local opportunities, RMI positions Malaysia as a gateway for regional venture capital activity focussed on three objectives:
- Support the growth of Malaysian startups to become regional and global players
- Facilitate ecosystem development and best-practice transfer by working with established global fund managers who bring institutional experience, operational know-how, and innovative investment models that enhance local startup capabilities
- Welcome established venture generators to unearth new entrepreneurs and support the growth of existing ones
Through these efforts, RMI enhances collaboration between international and Malaysian companies, boosts productivity, and facilitates knowledge transfer while creating new pathways to entrepreneurship for Malaysian talent.
Criteria & Eligibility
The RMI programme selects fund managers through rigorous evaluation of their investment strategy, DPI track record, operational capabilities, and commitment to developing Malaysia's startup ecosystem. We support two types of regional fund managers:
International Fund Managers
- Active in regionalising and expanding portfolio companies into Malaysia.
- Demonstrate capability in providing market access and supporting the regional expansion of Malaysian startups.
- Facilitate the entry of high-growth global companies in Malaysia.
- Foster collaborative partnerships with Malaysian companies.
Established Venture Generators
- Operate structured venture-building programmes that connect foreign and local talent.
- Accelerate pathways to entrepreneurship through founder development and community initiatives.
- Launch and scale new ventures that strengthen Malaysia’s startup pipeline.
- Build collaborative partnerships with Malaysian ecosystem partners.
GP Spotlight
Two (2) regional firms were selected under the RMI to support local companies' regional expansion, facilitate global partnerships, and provide access to international networks and expertise.
